저는 2016년 인도네시아에서 한국으로 넘어와 KAIST 한국과학영재학교에 입학했습니다. 이후 KAIST 화학과에 진학해 학사 학위를 취득하며 한국에서 연구자라는 꿈에 한 발짝 다가갈 수 있었습니다. 저는 보다 깊이 있는 공부를 위해 현재 KAIST 신소재공학과에 석사과정으로 재학 중입니다. 앞으로 연구자라는 꿈을 이루기 위해 단기적으로는 박사 과정에 진학하고자 하고, 장기적으로는 연구소나 학계로 진출하려고 합니다. 

하지만 여기에 있어선 외국인 학생으로서 다양한 제약들이 있는 게 사실입니다. 저는 KAIST 학부 시절 한 회사에서 인턴십 기회가 있었는데 당시 인턴십 비자를 취득하는 데 어려움을 겪었습니다. 

화학을 전공한 제가 시장조사·비즈니스 관련 업무로 인턴십을 하려고 하니 출입국 사무소는 "인턴십 업무와 전공이 맞지 않는다"는 이유로 비자 발급을 거절했습니다. 이후 저는 KAIST 국제협력팀에 도움을 요청했고 비자 담당 선생님께서 출입국 사무소 사무관에게 전화로 제 상황을 설명했는데, 그럼에도 비자 신청은 되지 않았습니다. 

그 다음 날 저는 또 관련 서류들을 챙겨 출입국 사무소로 갔습니다. 그 정도로 인턴십을 하고 싶었기 때문입니다. 그때 저는 앞서 접수했던 사무관과는 다른 분에게 신청을 했고, 그분께선 아무런 질문 없이 곧장 비자를 발급해주셨습니다. 담당자마다 비자 신청 기준이 다른 이유는 아직까지 잘 모르겠습니다. 하나 확실한 건 외국인 학생으로서 비자를 발급하는 기준이 너무나 복잡하고 어렵다는 것입니다. 

지난 몇 년 동안 한국 정부가 장학금 프로그램 제공, 비자 정책 완화, 외국인 취업 기회 개방 등, 유학생들의 정착을 위해 최선을 다해 노력하는 것을 계속해서 봐왔고 정말 감사하게 생각합니다. 

외국인 학생들을 위한 제도 정립이 아주 중요하다고 생각합니다. 제 주변만 해도 한국에서 취직을 해 계속 한국에 머물고 싶어 하는 외국인 친구들이 꽤 많이 있습니다. 영주권, 비자, 국적 취득 등에서 겪는 어려움은 이들이 한국에서의 거주에 대해 충분히 고민할 수 있는 이유가 될 거라고 생각합니다. 

요즘은 한국의 비자 관련 제도가 많이 완화되었다고 알고 있습니다. 이전에는 비자 때문에 취직을 못 하는 친구도 있고, 본국에서 결혼을 하고 가족을 데리고 왔음에도 본인이 아닌 가족은 한국에서 일을 할 수 없는 경우도 있었습니다. 영주권을 따고 싶은데도 신청하는 과정이 복잡해 힘들어하는 친구들도 많이 봤습니다. 결국에는 비자 취득의 불편함 때문에 다른 나라로 가거나 본국으로 돌아가는 친구들도 상당수였습니다. 

그렇기에 앞으로 비자 관련 제도가 계속해서 완화된다면 한국에서 정착하고 싶은 외국인 친구들에게 많은 도움이 될 것이라고 생각합니다. 

한국에서 유학 생활을 하면서, 저와 같은 꿈을 가진 외국인 유학생들이 많다는 사실을 알게 되었습니다. 2024년에도 외국인 유학생들에게 도움이 되는 정책이나 제도 개선에 힘써주시면 감사하겠습니다. 

The start of the year 2024 marks the beginning of my 9th year of studying in South Korea. Looking back, I am still amazed by how fast time has flown, and I am even more grateful by how many life-changing opportunities along with lifetime friendships I have got while studying here.

At every milestone throughout my journey here, starting from receiving my high school degree from Korea Science Academy of KAIST to earning my bachelor’s degree from KAIST, I realized that I am getting closer towards my dream to become a researcher. In pursuit of a higher education, I am currently doing my Master’s degree at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at KAIST. While studying and conducting my research, I have always been looking forward to achieving yet another milestone, that is to pursue my PhD degree at KAIST in the short-term and to work in research institutes or universities in Korea finally in the long-term.

Throughout my journey as an international student here, however, it is true that there are various restrictions. When I was an undergraduate student at KAIST, I got an internship opportunity at a company, but I had a hard time getting an internship visa at that time.

I majored in chemistry back then, and the internship I was about to do was about market research and business-related work. When I went to the immigration office to apply for the visa, the immigration officer refused to issue my visa because my internship work and my major are not related. Then, I asked help from KAIST International Scholar and Student Services Team, and the person-in-charge for international student visa application explained my situation to the immigration officer; yet, the visa was still not issued.

The next day, I brought all the required documents and went to the immigration office again as I was so desperate not to lose the internship opportunity. At that time, I applied the visa to a different immigration officer from the previous one, and the officer issued my visa right away without further questions. Up to now, I am still not sure why each person-in-charge has different criteria for visa application. However, one thing for sure, I do think that some of the criteria for issuing visa for international students are quite complicated and difficult.

Throughout the years, I have seen how the Korean government has tried their best in continuously helping international students to settle down by providing scholarship programs, easing visa policies, and also opening job opportunities for foreigners. 

I think it is very important to establish visa-related systems for international students as there are quite many foreign friends around me who want to get a job in Korea and stay in Korea. However, if I pick some of the major reasons why they reconsider their decisions of living in Korea is mainly due to the difficulties they face in obtaining permanent residency and visas, as well as naturalization process.

I know it well how the visa-related system in Korea has been eased a lot nowadays. Previously, there were some of my friends who couldn't get a job because of visa restrictions, and there were also some friends coming to Korea bringing their family but their family members could not work in Korea due to visa-related problems. There are also some friends who had difficulties while applying for the permanent residency due to the complicated application process. In the end, many of them went either went back to their home countries or went to other countries due to the inconvenience process of obtaining the visa.

Therefore, if the visa-related system continues to be eased in the future, I think it will be very helpful for foreigners, especially who want to settle down in Korea.

I believe that it is not only me, but there are also many international students studying in Korea who have the same dream of wanting to settle down in Korea just like me. I really wish that in the year of 2024, the government will continue their efforts in improving the policies or systems that benefit international students in the future! Thank you!
